Problems....

CAKE FABRIC DYE.... NOT WORKING!!!

Rather cross with myself.... I bought the wrong type of cotton drill and now the cake fabric won't dye the right colour... this means I have wasted time and money just because I made a fabric buying mistake... :( I have now learnt to never ever gamble buying cotton drill in London just because its cheaper.... the quality was terrible! Silly silly Mary!! :( :(

First Fitting - Hyacinth Horseradish (Gardener)

There were a few changes needed with this costume, such as the shape of the crinoline and adjustments on the blouse. Will and Sarina made a few design decisions with the patchwork and colours - purples yellows and greens.

I have found that designers like to often change their minds about various things! This can be frustrating at times as you feel like your making progress then often your knocked back due to a un-forseen change. I have learnt to keep an open mind and remember that what I am working on is a developmental process which requires time and patience.

First Fitting - Hyacinth Horseradish (Mushroom)

This costume is so fun! Couldn't help but chuckle to myself throughout the whole fitting! :)

It fitted Steve really well and Nicole has put so so so much hard work into the fantastic textiles samples! :)

Will and Sarina literally could not get enough them!

This fitting was good fun and very very rewarding to see the design come to life.

First Fittings - Cake

This fitting went really well! Will and Sarina were very happy with the development of the design and the scale of the Cake. When the Actor Steve Wickenden tried the structure on he said it was very comfortable and that he could easily get in and out of it - even to the point where he can crouch down  inside the cage so he is not seen. This works great as a costume/prop!

I have learnt so much already about what is required as a Supervisor, how important it is to take notes photographs and professionally act with makers, designers and actors. I feel that I have come along so far already within this project, my confidence is just growing :)

First Fitting - Sage

This fitting was very exciting! Met the actor who was playing Sage for the first time! He looks perfect for the role :)

I was nervous none the less as again being a professional environment I had to represent myself, the course and the costume team with the highest of standards.

I believe I communicated with everyone to this level and worked well with the designer and the maker.

First Fittings - Rapunzel

We couldn't get the actor to travel down for this fitting so we used Sally Bourner as our model since she was a similar build.

The fitting went very well, we had Will and Mandy supervising us.

We discussed colours and Will as the Designer changed his mind on the blue and decided we should think more Pinks/lilacs for the under dress. We should keep the muslin on the top dress but change the under dress fabrics from being white to more of a base colour as Rapunzel should be pretty and not plain.

Having this as my first ever fitting as a Supervisor it went really well! I felt in control, organised and professional. I think Will and Mandy were pleased with how the fitting went too :)

Budget...

Hmmm....

Well I have just found out the allowance for the costumes. No way on earth is it enough. I really am going to have to be either very clever about this or very creative.... either way I still think I am going to be over budget. I will try my hardest at not being over budget but I don't think it's going to happen. I am a bit nervous about working to such a professional level like this as I have never done any accounting or budgeting in my life. I will speak to Helen and arrange a tutorial about how I can improve my excel skills.

Oh how I wish I was better at Maths!

I have learnt already the importance of money management and being on top of finances!

Sourcing!

Off to London I go!

Well I went to London today to gather fabric sourcing samples. I must say it really was a learning curve! Not only were Shepherd's Bush shop keepers unhelpful the completely looked down upon me for being a student! It really annoyed me as I felt that I couldn't do my job properly as they said "no samples no samples" at first. When I explained to them that this was for a professional pantomime production they really still didn't get the message that I was prepared to spend a lot of money with them if they helped me out! Eventually after hours of roaming the shops I collected some great samples. For some of the characters, such as the Cake and Rapunzel I found it very hard find the right fabrics. I think with the Cake costume we are going to have to dye cotton drill as matching the correct pink fabric to the design was impossible! Rapunzel's fabrics gave me a headache too as I just don't know what will work for her costume!

I also found that after I while (once I got into the swing of things) I started seeing by eye and touch what fabric was what. This buying experience has really helped me get to grips with fabrics and the costs of them.

We shall see what the rest of the week shall bring!

Learning Agreement

NAME:                       Mary EberleinCOURSE:                 BA (Hons) Costume with Performance DesignUNIT TITLE:             Specialist PracticeREFERENCE NO: CSS610CREDIT POINTS:   30WEIGHTING:            2.0DURATION:             9 WEEKSHRS OF STUDY:     300UNIT LEADER:       Mandy Barrington

Proposal:

I will be able to achieve this by planning my work effectively, and managing my time and resources efficiently. Using my work plan, I aim to improve my independent learning skills by being focused on specific tasks in a planned, sequential manner. Arranging meetings with my designers, makers and tutors will enable me to experience a professional level of communication. Using emails will also help maintain this contact from a distance. Practical research on garments and items will be carried out methodically using the internet, shops, library and other resources. When buying fabrics I will go to London and use local sources to collect samples. This will require a balance between practical reasoning and creativity and a high level of independent judgement when making these decisions. I plan to realise project solutions with group discussions and realistic thinking. I will be reflecting frequently on my progress and work using my production journal.

Experiencing this project will support my future aspirations of working in Costume. I feel that undertaking Supervising/Buying will help develop my decision making skills and improve my self confidence by holding the responsibility of running a wardrobe department. I have realised that I do not want to restrict my opportunities within this profession; therefore by gaining as many skills and as much experience as possible during this project, I can consolidate my strengths and reduce my weaknesses. I am very pleased to have this opportunity as it will add further variety and experience to my CV.
